COLLEGE!!!

Help in dealing with your transition to higher education

It may seem like it’s far away, but college is right around the corner for most of us.
Rocky alum and current University of Wyoming freshman Kacey Doner has experienced the transition from high school to college, and the fears and stresses that come along with it. Doner, a student-athlete on the Wyoming cross country and track teams, plans on double majoring in wildlife biology and environmental and natural resources during her time at Wyoming. She agreed to an interview with The Highlighter staff in an effort to help ebb the fears of college-bound juniors and seniors at Rocky.

Callin: How did you decide to attend University of Wyoming? Can you walk us through your process of choosing to go there?

Kacey: I did a bunch of visits to other schools, such as Utah State University and Humboldt State University, but University of Wyoming was the one that stood out the most. Along with looking for a school with good academics, I knew I wanted to run [on the track and cross country teams]. When I met all the girls on the team and talked to the coach, I knew it was a perfect match. The girls took such good care of me on my visit and stayed in touch with me after, so I knew I would be going onto a team with girls I could depend on. It was only an hour away from home, so I would be close to home, yet got to experience a different place at the same time.

How happy are you with your decision?

I’m super happy with my decision. I can’t imagine myself going anywhere else. I’ve met incredible friends, love my classes, and have had amazing opportunities.
When you visit a school, picture yourself living there for the next four years and if it’s the right school, it should make you super excited for what’s ahead.

Starting second semester of senior year, what was your process for getting ready for the next step in your academic career and transitioning to college?

I was still making my final decision. But, I had filled out all my college applications, and I was also filling out a lot of scholarships. Once I finally decided on University of Wyoming, I contacted the coach and told them I wanted to sign there! After I signed, she gave me the contact for another girl who had signed there, and I was able to talk to her. We decided to be roommates and that helped the transition go smooth, knowing I would have a good friend rooming with me when I started college.
I bought stuff for our dorm room, such as a mini fridge, rug, and pictures to hang up.
You never feel completely ready. . . you just have to trust that you’ll be able to figure everything out along the way.

What has the transition to higher education been like?

It was a super easy transition. Rocky Mountain High School prepares you really well for it. One difference that is nice is that you can decide what time of day you want to take your classes. Classes are a lot bigger though. Since you don’t have class all day, you have to be good with time management. There is stuff to do 24/7, and you have to know when to say no to stuff and get homework done. There’s also a lot more activities to choose from, so there is something for everyone.

What should people be prepared for when they go to college?

No one is telling you when you should have stuff done, so you need to be prepared to manage your own time and make your own schedule. Be prepared to learn how to manage your time. No one is making you go [to class]. You need to be responsible, and it may seem like a no-brainer, but do go to class. You can’t wait last minute to write a paper or read a book in college.

What’s been your favorite part of college so far? What’s been your least favorite part?

My favorite part of college has definitely been running cross country. I got so many incredible opportunities to compete and travel to races. I not only saw myself becoming a better runner, but I was also part of a team that was like family to me. Definitely get involved in something when you start school.
Least favorite part of college has been eating the dorm food. You end up having the exact same thing everyday, and it’s not that great. It’s also really hard to find healthy options sometimes. Stay away from the dessert section or, yes, you will get the ‘freshmen 15.’

What’s one thing on the packing list that people will absolutely need?

Clorox wipes. The dorms get so disgusting, and your roommate’s hair will be all over the bathroom area. Trust me.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to anyone heading off to college?

You will probably hear this a million times from so many people, but get involved in something. Don’t make it 100% about classes. There are so many cool people to meet and so many opportunities you don’t want to miss. Even if you’re not doing a sport, find something that interests you and allows you to take a break from studying. Classes are important, but the connections, friendships, and experiences you have are just as important.

To juniors and seniors currently stressed about their future?

It’s also not as stressful as you’re probably making it. Make sure you get your college applications done and fill out scholarships, but take time to enjoy your senior year of high school and hang out with friends. You will all be going different directions soon, so enjoy the time you have with them.
College is not as scary as it seems, so don’t stress so much about it!
