It’s the most wonderful time of year again–a time of joy, happiness, connection, and most importantly, giving! Giving back to the community can make a difference in your life and in the lives of others. Research shows that helping others can actually help our mood as well, so give giving a try this holiday season!
Here is are some ways you can give back to your community:
Donate Food
If you have extra food in your pantry, consider donating it to people in need at the Larimer County Food Bank, open from 10am to 3pm Monday through Friday. Just make sure the items are unopened, not past the expiration date, and non-perishable–things like rice, pasta, canned goods, and cereal. Better yet, make a special trip to the grocery to get exactly what the food bank needs; you can find that info here. Nearly 11% of Larimer County residents face food insecurity and don’t have access to resources to get food. The increase in food prices have also affected people. Donating food to a food bank can have a positive impact on families, seniors, and many other individuals.
Donate Toys
Toy drives donate to children by collecting toys or money to brighten their holiday season! You can donate all toys, from stuffed animals and Legos to anything creative like art supplies and craft kits. Don’t donate toys that are damaged, broken, or dirty. Giving gifts to children is very beneficial to support kids who are in need or struggling, and can also create an unforgettable memory!
Realities for Children run a drive called Santa’s Workshop and in 2024, they distributed toys to more than 1800 local children. They offer opportunities to volunteer as well as donate.
Kenzie’s Causes: Offers a “Dolls for Daughters and Toys for Boys” toy shop. They have a list of ways to support on their website.
NoCo Santa Squad: NoCo Santa Squad is focused on fulfilling the 2100 requests they’ve received this year. Founded by veterans and first responders, NoCo Santa Squad is looking for volunteers to wrap and deliver toys. Sign up on their website.
Volunteer at animal shelters
Helping at animal shelters can not only make a difference for the organization, but also you can create a great emotional bond with animals. This benefits them by creating a safe environment, prioritizes physical, and mental health. Volunteer opportunities can be found at the following local groups:
Animals Friends alliance: A dog is a man’s best friend. You could also make a best friend too by volunteering with the Animal Friends Alliance. They are accepting applications for volunteering from January 2-16. You must be 18+ to volunteer alone or have an adult volunteer if you are 13-17.
Rescued Friends Animal: This group is an animal sanctuary that rescues sheep, pigs, cows, turkeys, and more! You must be 18+ to volunteer and there are several different types of volunteer opportunities.
NOCO Humane: Are also seeking volunteers so it will have a PAW-stive impact! Volunteers must commit to six months and are required to be 18+. See their website for more details.
Help out your neighbor/neighborhood
Look out for anyone in your neighborhood who needs assistance–whether that’s helping out with yardwork, household chores, shoveling snow or pet sitting. You can also make cookies or small treats to deliver around your neighborhood in order to spread joy and create community. Don’t know anyone who needs help? Check out alittlehelp.org for some opportunities in and around Fort Collins!
Show your support and spirit this holiday season by giving back even if it’s something small. This could really brighten up someone’s holiday season! Plus, it’s really fun!
