Have you seen more and more people in public and on social media who have old school digital cameras? Well, that’s because digital cameras have slowly started making a comeback!
Typically, people use phones to take pictures to capture the fun moments and heartwarming memories, but people have started transitioning back to digital cameras because of their quality and to bring back retro, nostalgic items.
According to cbc.ca, an employee who works at a camera store, Evelyn Drake, reported hearing from young customers who are leaning towards a photography encounter that involves no phones. There could be a wide range of reasons as to why people use digital cameras.Gen Z is making the item trendy again and enjoy the vibe the camera brings.
The reason Gen Z even knows about digital cameras is because of the influence of TikTok, the retro look, and the camera’s uniqueness.
As reported by cnet.com, every generation has a fascination for technology and culture. People who are younger, seem to have a spark of interest in what their parents’ teen experience had been like. Items such as vinyl records, instant cameras, and much more have sparked interest for digital cameras and other items from a previous era.
The trends of TikTok influence pop culture when it comes to an item or place. Like any other social platform, it then spreads.
Pulling out a phone and taking a picture in a snap can be easy for sure but what makes the digital camera having its own special experience is how not too fast but too slow paced it can be just to take a photo.
Brands like Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, and Panasonic followed along with other manufacturers and have been updating their old models to modern digital cameras (according to cnet.com).
Gen Z is one of the most online generations ever. The rise of digital cameras can be seen as an attempt to get off line–to enjoy moments and take a real photo away from their phones. This stepping away from their phones is healthy and can help avoid over consumption of media.
It’s important to capture memories you hold dear–whether it’s on a phone, a digital camera, or an instant camera. It boosts well-being, fosters gratitude, reduces stress and helps us focus on positive moments. However you choose to do that, it’s always a good thing.
“I think digital cameras are trending nowadays simply because it’s easier to use,” junior Samantha Conkle said.
If you haven’t tried out a digital camera, they are widely available starting at about $30 and going up to $100+. If you’ve been looking for a way to capture your memories in a more hands-on way, consider picking one up and working on your photography skills. Colorado is a beautiful place to practice!

I started using my digital camera this year too and I do agree that it takes time off of my phone and allows me to be more in the moment
