The smell of butter and the crackling of the instantly reminds one of the classic cinema experience. The soft whirring of the Icee machine as it produces the iconic frozen beverage perfectly balances the loud popping of the popcorn.
Working at a movie theater has been an absolute joy for me, and I have come to love almost every aspect of working here. The people, ambiance, and benefits have all contributed to an amazing work experience. The theater is comfortable, and the many people working here agree. This is what it is like to work at a movie theater.
The lobby immediately welcomes you with a warm glow to beckon you to the concession stand to clock in. Once in the concession stand, you can conversate with whoever is in the concession stand. After clocking in, you are free to go to whatever location you are scheduled in.
Box Office
The box office may just be the easiest job at a movie theater because most people purchase their tickets online, but may be one of the most important positions at a movie theater.
One of the most important jobs of the box office is to set up the showtimes for all the guests to see. The employee does this by creating display plates that are put up on the lightboard above the desk.
To complete the times, the box office employee must compare two sheets of paper with the showtimes for the present day, and the next day to decipher what times change between the two days.
One of the most important tasks for the box office employee is to sell tickets. The employee is meant to tender cash and exchange tickets for guests to see the most popular movies.
The box office may be a small, confined space, but it is one of the most important workspaces within a movie theater.
However, many employees find themselves with extra time while in the box office and use that time to delve into a book or clean around the vestibule.
Concessions
Working the concessions stand is one of the more stressful positions due to the constant customer interaction. Some may find it difficult or irritating, but there is nothing like getting a nice whiff of butter from the first popcorn of the day.
Concessions are the most important part of the movie theater ecosystem because it acts like a central hub for the other positions. If you ever need something to do, go help in the stand.
At concessions, the employee is mainly responsible for making the orders of popcorn and drinks that any customer wants.
Although concessions are a lot more than merely serving up popcorn and fizzy drinks. It also includes constantly restocking the candy, hot foods, and drinks to ensure each guest has the best experience we can offer.
Concessions also happens to be the busiest location, and often takes a long while to clean up at the end of the day, but it is fulfilling to be able to serve so many customers the classic movie theater snacks!
A manager, states that his favorite part of the job is, “The free Icee, free Coke Icee, and being able to get free Icee at all times.”
Usher
The usher position may take on many forms such as cleaning, theater checking, or scanning tickets at the podium.
Cleaning theaters is simple enough and most guests are extremely polite. Although, now and then, there will be a family that leaves a huge mess after their show.
Ushering is very simple: sweeping the floor, wiping down the seats, conducting restroom checks, and keeping the hallways clear of debris.
Ushering is one of the most fulfilling roles as a team member states, “My favorite part of working at the movie theater is the fulfillment I get from cleaning up A clean row of seats. messes.”
Theater checking is not terribly important, but it is worth mentioning. This role is reserved for people to walk into theaters to check on
the visual and audio quality and overall safety of the theater. Not to mention getting those annoying people off their phones!
The last usher position is the podium. The podium person is meant to be the bouncer of the theater, and make sure everyone is in their
proper theater. The podium worker needs to check IDs for people going to rated R films, and also make sure no one is sneaking into any movies.
The podium is important but may be one of the most boring positions at a movie theater because they are confined to such a small space. More often than not, the podium employee visits the concessions to provide some brain stimulation on a slow day.
Podium is also responsible for mopping the entire lobby before the theater closes, and that can be a daunting task on busy days when there is not much time after the last showtime before closing.
Overall
Overall, the average day at the theater is quite simple. Each position is clearly laid out, and easy to complete. The cozy and warm environment provides for an amazing ambiance that is easy to get lost in.
The smell of butter, chit-chat on the lobby televisions, and radio static all combine to form a wonderful atmosphere. Not even to mention the wonderful team the theater has built. The pictures of cinema legends along the hallways inspire the many guests who walk through the hallways each day.
The movie theater is an amazing place to work and is filled with amazing people. This was merely a small insight into the true life of a theater Worker. The cozy atmosphere truly represents the simple joys that theater employees still get to immerse themselves in every day at work.
