Military History

As students and teachers start preparing for the new school year in 2018-2019, we can expect some new classes to be offered at Rocky Mountain High School. One class many students are excited to enroll in is Military History. Military History will be a quarter class and will count as 5 elective credits and will be taught by Mr. Schauer in the Social Studies department. This course if for students who want to go more in-depth with the military aspects of history.

In U.S. History courses, there are many other topics, like the formation of the Constitution and the Civil War, that must be taught so that the military aspect does not go into depth and can’t be taught to its full potential.

For students interested in the military background of history, this course will be available next year. One thing Mr. Schauer wants students to know that this will be a project-based class. He does not want it to be a typical lecture class. Mr. Schauer hopes to play many games and show many videos. Students will also have a choice to study what they want within the military, including technology, weaponry, and formations as examples.

The class will be a packed quarter entailing many details. Some topics that will be covered are formation of a U.S. foreign policy in late 1800s, formation of modern policy before the class moves into World War 1. The big unit that will be specialized is World War 2. Some shorter topics will be the Cold war, Korean War, and Vietnam. Students will end the unit with more contemporary aspects.

Assistant Principal Karen Bennett said, “We have a group of kids that care about the impact the military had on history so it will be good for them.”

With all the new students who are coming to Rocky, it opens opportunities for new classes. New classes like computer science, studio art history and the history of the military make school more interesting for students. Keep your eye out for these classes, Bo’s!
