Post Malone Stoney Review

Post Malone’s newest album Stoney conveys tones that give off very upbeat sounds that I love.

Post Malone released his first single, “White Iverson,” in 2015; fame followed. Coming out on December 9, 2016, “Stoney” followed up “White Iverson” with the same concepts and sounds that fans remember. The album was set to originally release months ago, but due to producing and editing issues, the release date was set back three times. Post Malone’s music is a blend of classic hip-hop and modern rap. “Congratulations” and “Money Made Me Do It” are two songs that fans and critics are currently raving about. The album, along with the songs, are some of iTunes’ top downloaded rap albums right now.

Each song is upbeat, a tone that many people are looking for this year. “Congratulations” and “Money Made Me Do It” stand out among the buoyant music. Post Malone incorporates the upbeat styles of classic R&B/hip-hop and modern rap which  appears in both “Stoney” and “White Iverson.” The upbeat music has a sound that is perfect for everyone who enjoys modern rap. As “Complex” states, Post Malone’s music was unexpected but is appreciated by everyone. The continuity of Post Malone’s combination between R&B and rap in Stoney is a great follow up to White Iverson.

Post Malone raps about the troubles he faced in his youth, like being put down and neglected by peers. In “Congratulations.” Post Malone raps “I dreamed it all ever since I was young, They said I wouldn’t be nothing, Now they always say congratulations […]”. He reflects heavily on his adolescence and childhood, stating troubles and past problems. This gives the album a much more serious mood, which brings out his emotions toward his problems.

The album features 2 Chainz (“Money Made Me Do It”), Quavo (“Congratulations”), and Kehlani (“Feel”); the appearance of a famous artist in Post Malone’s new album shows that his fame is quickly amplifying and that his music pulls interest from many music genres. The start of Post Malone’s fame, White Iverson. didn’t feature anyone famous, yet still found fame. After the release of his hit single, 2 Chainz requested to be featured in this album.

Overall, the album was very appealing. Throughout the album, I was listening for sounds that were related to White Iverson and I found many. Fortunately, not every single song sounded the same, some were different. Post Malone does a great job of blending different genres of music while creating new sounds that I enjoyed. The songs were very modern while bringing back some of the modern hip-hop concepts that I love.

5/5 stars.
