Rings Movie Review
The new horror film “Rings” is an attempted comeback from the original 2002 movie “The Ring,” with the same mythology as the first movie, but turns out to be not worth your time.
The movie is about a little girl named Samara who was killed and has unfinished business in the living world. She comes back and haunts people through an endless video tape which is very dangerous to watch. The attempt they were making for the Rings was to show the background from the original movie, to show where everything began and why it began, but throughout most of the movie they are just using the same types of scares and same story as from in the first movie.
The writing in this movie wasn’t original, they basically rewrote the original movie. Characters in the movie were very dull; they didn’t bring life to or make the movie interesting via the dialogue or the way the scenes were set up. The movie didn’t have many real scares, and most of the plot was already expected to happen due to the past Ring movie. The movie starts out very confusing because after starting the movie with one character they quickly kill him off and then bring in a new character. Because of the repeat in story maybe this movie would be interesting to someone who has not seen the original, but being for those who have already seen the original, it felt like rewatching it with worse acting.
The biggest problem with this movie was not the repetitive storyline but the awful acting. Right from the beginning of the movie it looked like it was going to be cheesy based on the dialogue and ridiculous over acting. The majority of the movie went on like this, filled with cliched scares. In the original movie there were good scares but only because they were unexpected, in the new movie everything is repeated so there is nothing new, therefore there weren’t any real scares.
Another problem with this movie was the digital animation. Being 2017 one would expect a big budget film like this to be able to produce some truly terrifying images that really look like they could walk right out of the screen, but in Rings the animation was very fake looking, even in comparison to the first movie, making the overall feel of the movie even worse.
At just about every turn this movie is a copy of the original, filled with bad acting and bad animation, and, worse, it’s simply not a scary movie, which is of course the viewer’s expectation.
