Whether it’s recycling, organizing cleanups, or spreading awareness, students turn passion into action. Rocky’s Environmental Conservation Organization (RECO) is a club that brings students together who care about protecting the earth.
During meetings, members explore environmental issues in the community and around the world, take action through projects such as Compost Queen, and attend events at CSU. Field trips are important aspects of RECO because they allow members to learn about environmental efforts outside of school and spread awareness on real-world issues.
Compost Queen is an organization in Northern Colorado that promotes composting within the community. RECO has partnered with Compost Queen to introduce green compost bins in the school’s cafeteria to collect food waste. A goal of RECO is to expand composting to the Rocky Bistro, Cafe, and culinary classes.
RECO has also frequently attended an event at CSU called The Youth Climate Leadership Summit. The program features speakers from climate sciences, and students have the opportunity to educate themselves on various topics of their choosing.
Other opportunities within the club include trash pick-ups, presentations on topics around the environment, and receiving the climate literacy award. Hands-on experience and being more informed are how students better understand the environment.
“There’s a lot of care and community in Rocky, and most people can find a place where there’s other people who care about similar things,” Jocelyn Limbaugh (11) said.
RECO brings students together who care about the environment. Rocky students have the opportunity to help out their community through action and activism to represent climate issues worldwide.
The club aims to advertise more and get students involved with a mission to save the environment. Participating in school activities like Trick or Treat Street or Club Rush are other ways the club will be contributing to the school in the future.
It’s a great opportunity for students to be a part of a club that’ll make a difference in school and the community. Thursday during lunch in room 512, and anyone is welcome. You can contact Mrs. Castillo for more information.
