Migration by Bonobo

Bonobo’s new album, Migration, was very calming and has a different type of sound in each song and a variety of beats.

Migration was released January 13, 2017, putting EDM artist Bonobo at the peak of his popularity. EDM is electronic dance music played at big concerts commonly called raves. The music is a grouping of sounds, usually quick paced and often accompanied by a singer and heavy amounts of bass notes. The music has a variety of styles ranging from chillstep, like on this album, to much heavier dark dubstep, often called trap or house. The music is more of an off-colored version of more popular EDM, which is quicker paced and heavy.

This type of album is good for more relaxing and calming situations. It has more of a tropical feel to it, giving it its own individual sound. For example, the song “Kerala” had a very relaxing and beachy vibe. I heard a lot of different sounds in each of the songs that I have not heard in his music, giving this album an interesting uniqueness (compared to other albums).

My favorite song was “Figures” because it conveyed a good, catchy beat. I found myself listening to this song more than any of the others. Though the beat is more fast paced it’s still a really relaxing song with an island feel to it. Bonobo does a very good job of transitioning from the chorus into the bass drop and back into the next bass drop. On the other hand, the one song I couldn’t get into was “Grains.” It had a very bland beat with barely any pickup, making it difficult to listen to. Unlike most of the other songs on the album, this song felt darker and the beat was almost too slow. “Grains” didn’t fit into the album very well; it wasn’t like the other songs. Instead of a calming tropical feel, it was just bland.

The album overall was really good. I don’t always prefer to listen to slower EDM, but this album was an exception after hearing the overall peacefulness of it.
