When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?
Seventeen-year-old superstar Billie Eilish released her most anticipated debut album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” during the last week of March.
The last project Eilish released before the singles for this album was back in 2017. She blew up right after its release and her millions of fans could not wait for her first official album. Two years later, Eilish’s album is finally out and people can’t stop talking about it.
The album conveys a very personal and emotional side of Billie Eilish, highlighting who she is and who she loves. It starts out with some fun, kind of dark, songs and then there’s a switch and the album gets quite sad.
Starting with a song called “!!!!!!!,” Eilish creates a 14-second long intro in which you hear her take out her Invisalign and say “I’ve taken out my Invisalign and this is the album!” Everyone in the room laughs and the album officially starts. I thought this was a cute way to start the album and it showed how playful Eilish can be.
The second track “bad guy” is one of my favorites. When I first listened to the album, I had such high hopes for the next songs after listening to this one because it’s nothing I’ve heard before. It has a fun feeling to it, mixed with sound effects and backbeats that make it feel like something out of a scary movie. The song is about Eilish being with a guy who thinks he’s cool, but she’s the true bad guy. I absolutely love this one.
Next up is “xanny.” This is a very interesting song with a slower sound to it but some added bass to it to make it lighter and some added drums as well. It’s about how all her friends do Xanax, but she doesn’t. I liked this one, but I don’t want listen to it over and over.
Eilish’s next track “you should see me in a crown,” has been out since last July. I’ve always liked this song. It is a powerful, dark song. It fits perfectly with rest of the album.
The next song titled “all the good girls go to hell” is another one of my favorites. It’s very playful, but as the title suggests, quite dark. It has the same energy as”bad guy” and I loved the lyrics in this one. It’s not like anything I’ve heard before.
The sixth track, “wish you were gay” has been out for a couple years now, but Eilish polished it up and put it on her album. This one sounds a lot like it would be off her EP, as it doesn’t have that intense feeling to it like the previous songs have. I enjoy this one.
This next song always has been one of my favorite songs ever since it came out. “when the party’s over” is an incredible sad song. The soft yet intense melody in the back and Eilish’s weak voice just makes you want to instantly cry. I think this is one of the prettiest depressing songs I’ve ever heard.
Eilish’s eighth song is called “8,” a coincidence? I don’t think so. This one I don’t listen to much, but it is a cute song. It’s playful, but the lyrics are kind of sad. She talks about not knowing how to make someone happy, but like “wish you were gay” it’s not as dark sounding as some of the others on the album.
The next track of the album, “my strange addiction” is my number one favorite song off the album. Eilish adds some dialogue from the show “The Office.” According to Hypebeast, Eilish said the beat of this song reminded her of when Michael Scott makes a movie called “Threat Level Midnight” and he dances in it so she sampled some of their lines. I think this one is so interesting, having another playful but dark sound to it. This one is always on repeat.
The 10 track “bury a friend” was released the same day she announced her album coming out. It has the name of her title, “when we all fall asleep, where do we go?” in it. It’s different than any of the other songs; it’s quite creepy. I loved it a lot when it came out and couldn’t stop listening to it.
This next song “ilomilo” flows perfectly from the end of “bury a friend.” It sounds like the same song. I like this one because it has a very anxious feeling to it, kind of like you’re lost in a forest. It’s a very unique song.
Next up on Eilish’s album is a sad one: “listen before I go.” It is very intense and I caution people before they listen to it as it’s a song about suicide. She talks about taking her to the rooftop and how there’s no way out but down. I was not ready for this song and it made me feel empty. I think it’s a beautiful song, but I can’t listen to it that much.
The second to last track is called “i love you.” This is such a heartbreaking song, but it’s unbelievably pretty. It talks about this guy who accidentally said I love you and she’s loves him too but she doesn’t want to be. I doesn’t have any intense moments or dark feelings like most of the other songs. It’s just the guitar and her angelic voice. I’m obsessed with this one.
The last song in the album is “gooodbye” This one was extremely interesting as Eilish used lyrics from all the previous songs to make this one. It’s two minutes of her pulling a bunch of different lines. It’s kind of an eerie song but is a perfect ending track. It leaves you speechless from the intensity of the album, like an ending of a movie.
Overall, I thought this album was incredible. It’s Eilish’s first album so people had a lot of expectations and she exceeded all expectation. It is a work of art. It is fresh sound and, no one has made music like her–and she’s only 17. I’d recommend checking this album out and if you’re interested in seeing Eilish perform, she’ll be at Red Rocks on June 5. https://www.axs.com/events/369165/billie-eilish-tickets

I loved reading your story! I agree with you about the anticipation that many people had leading up to this album’s release. My friend surprised me with Billie Eilish tickets at Red Rocks and this review got me even more excited!
