Thank U, Next ‘Bos
Unless you have been living under a rock recently, you have most likely heard Ariana Grande’s new song, “thank u, next.” After she released the song in early November, fans were eagerly awaiting the music video. Ariana and some of her close friends began teasing some hints as to what the music video was about just a few weeks after the release.
The music video was released in late November. It focuses on four of Ariana’s favorite “girl power” movies from the early 2000s. The video incorporates aspects of each movie into the video with hints and even characters from the real movies.
The first movie highlighted is “Mean Girls.” “Mean Girls” is about a high school with the “plastics” running the school and how one girl overcomes her obsession with popularity and finds her worth. This movie incorporates aspects of the movie such as, similar clothing, characters from the real movie, and the famous “burn book.”
The next movie is “Bring It On.” It is about a cheerleading squad that finds competition with another school from the same area. Grande brings in some of her closest friends to be a part of her cheerleading squad. She changes just a few things about the clothing from this movie. The uniforms in the movie say TUN on the shirts, standing for “thank u, next.” It was interesting to see how the video gets personal with Grande, since it is a really personal song.
After that, comes “13 Going on 30.” The whole movie is about a woman who wakes up after wishing to be 30 and finds her life changed. She has a new boyfriend and realizes that she wants her old friend back. She wishes for her life to change back with a dollhouse. In the video, it shows Grande’s dollhouse. The dollhouse features four different rooms for each movie in the video.
The last and final movie is “Legally Blonde.” This is about a woman who is trying to get her boyfriend to propose, but he is struggling because she is too blond. She gets into Harvard and really shows her perseverance to get what she wants. Grande uses her own dog in the music video to replicate the movie.
All of these movies show how strong women fight for what they want. This is also what the song is based upon. Grande focuses on loving herself before anyone else. The lyrics talk about her past relationships and how they have shaped her into who she is today. It is a strong message with a fun twist for the music video. Thank you, next ‘Bos.
