DECA State
DECA State is a great way to get a sneak peek at the real-life business world. On Saturday February 24-27 over 20 Rocky kids went to Colorado Springs to compete in over 20 events. Business teacher Mr. Papp, Ms.Brown, Ms. Manzanares, and Mrs. Lyell all chaperoned and advised on this trip with sophomores, juniors, and seniors participating.
In order to get to the State events, students had to go to districts and present successfully. State qualifiers had to pay $300 to go to Colorado Springs for four days. The costs went to transportation, one dinner, one lunch, lodging, and a good time.
Because it was cheaper to stay at the Doubletree Hotel about 15 minutes away from the Broadmoor where all of the events were held, students took shuttles over. Participating schools were from Fort Collins, Aurora, Denver, Littleton, and more. The number of participants made it very difficult to win; only the top competitors could prevail and win for their chapter.
Rocky had six groups with 13 kids qualifying as finalists for written events. These written events were made up of anywhere from 5-16 page papers with topics ranging from social media campaigns, new inventions, or public service announcements.
Qualifiers received medals and a trophy that will be placed in the DECA trophy case by the San Juan offices. Nicholas AmRein, Ailish Beveridge, Jade Gosar, Annika Larson, Margaret Thompson were all National Qualifiers.
Students interested in participating in future DECA or FBLA events can contact Mr. Papp, Ms. Brown, or Ms. Lyell. This is a great opportunity to get an idea of how to real world works. It is also great practice for a job interview as DECA looks very good on a business resume.
