What They Expected Vs. What They Got

The high school experience is often exaggerated in movies to be scary and lonely. Until a student actually arrives in high school, this is the only view they might have.. But what is it really like? The Highlighter staff took to the halls of Rocky to ask  freshmen  how what they expected when coming into high school compares to what they have actually experienced.

Skye Sutherlin

Q: What were you expecting high school to be like?

A: “I thought it would be a big place that would be hard to get used to.”

Q: What actually happened versus what you expected?

A: “I was able to find all my classes and sort of decode the maze of the building.”

Q: What did you expect to be the hardest thing about high school?

A: “Getting through the halls.”

Q: What is your advice for next year’s incoming freshman?

A: “Branch out, things will get easier.”

 

Clayton Zivkovic

Q: What were you expecting your high school experience to be like?

A: “I thought it was going to be super nerve racking; the only thing I knew about high school was from the movies and it made me nervous.”

Q: What did you expect the hardest thing to be about high school?

A: “The classes, and getting through the halls.”

Q: What is your advice for next year’s incoming freshman?

A: “Try to get involved, be yourself. Make this YOUR experience.”

Jonah Duran

Q: What were you expecting your high school experience to be like?

A: “Not that much different from middle school, just a bit more freedom.”

Q:  You came into high school having these expectations of what it would be like, what was the reality?

A: “I thought I would have a lot more homework than I actually do. The lunches are super long and I thought they would be shorter.”

Q: What is your advice for next year’s incoming freshman?  

A: “Don’t be scared, get your work done, and have fun.”

Savanna Kelly

Q: What were you expecting your high school experience to be like?

A: “I was expecting more freedom but a lot more responsibilities.”

Q:  You came into high school having these expectations of what it would be like, what was the reality?

A: “I honestly thought I was going to be completely lost but within the first week I was able to find all my classes; I was also worried I would get shoved around but everyone is super nice.”

Q: What did you think would be the hardest thing about high school?

A: “For me, I think, my biggest thing was going to be making new friends.”

Q: What is your advice for next year’s incoming freshman?

A: “Dive right in, treat it like a pool, the slower you get in the more you will want to resist. Jump right in and get into the swings of things.”
