This is the first segment of our new series, You Should Take This Class! The series will feature student recommendations on classes to take and why. If you’re interested in writing in with your recommendations, you still can here. We’ll add as we receive more.
“The class I would recommend to someone wondering what to take is Catering. You learn a lot of different cooking skills and recipes and afterwards you get to eat some really good food. Unless you plan on ordering from restaurants for your entire life, being able to cook food you like is a necessity. Catering is a good way to get into cooking and start enjoying it because the full workload isn’t on you so you still get some experience but aren’t just jumping into cooking full meals by yourself. There are also many competitions where you and your teammates come up with or edit a recipe to try and beat the other groups. It makes the class really fun and gives you a sense of what it could be like to work in the food industry having to rush to get food out in time while making sure it still tastes and looks good.” -Caden Davidson, grade 11
“I recommend taking Yearbook because it’s demanding yet very laid back. It’s very easy to balance fun with friends and work time. It’s also a great way of getting a lot of elective credits very fast if you desperately need them.” -Cody Pescaia, grade 11
“I recommend culinary nutrition. The mix of making food and doing projects was really fun and engaging. You get to learn about health benefits and what you can do to live a long full life while also making really good food! One of my favorite recipes was a Chicken Alfredo that we made. We used whole grain pasta and put broccoli in it to make it delicious and nutritious. While this class was work, it was also a fun way to learn new things by being hands on instead of just sitting in a classroom learning and taking notes; you get to actually make the food which is quite exciting. The other thing I like about this class is that it counts for health credits, so it’s a different perspective on health and it’s a fun way to earn those credits if P.E isn’t your thing or other things like that. You can also take catering after culinary nutrition, which is making food every day, which is a fun option if you like cooking. Overall, I highly recommend this class and think it was really fun to take.” -Maya Kern, grade 11
“The class I’m recommending is Yearbook with Ms. White. It’s such a nice and chill class until it isn’t, and Ms. White crashes out. BUT that only happens once in a blue moon, however, when it does happen, it’s completely reasonable and justified on her end. Let’s focus on the good though. Yearbook is a very fun and enjoyable class and encourages you as a student to go out and take pictures because they sure as hell aren’t gonna take themselves and also forces you to get stuff done because the deadlines for page sections come fast and come frequently. My final reason you should join yearbook is because we need people and we need them bad. Thirteen people in a room working to get 250+ pages done over three quarters is hard but would be so much easier if we had even three more people next year.” – Layne Mahaffey, grade 11
“Pottery is the best class to relax and expand your art skills. The class offers lots of fun opportunities, throwing on the wheel glazing, underglazes to personalize your work. Ms. Loy plays the best music to jam out to and let go of everything in the world. Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, Ms. Loy is an incredible teacher who really knows how to guide each student in achieving their pottery goals. For beginners, she provides clear and encouraging instructions, making sure you feel comfortable and confident in your abilities. The class is structured in a way that allows you to progress at your own pace, so you’re never overwhelmed but always challenged. If you’re looking for a creative outlet that’s both soothing and fulfilling, pottery with Ms. Loy is an experience you won’t want to miss.” – Talia Fletcher, grade 11
“I love taking a class with Ms. Rumley because she is so fun and you learn so much about the culture. She is such a good person and the class is so much fun. I didn’t really like Spanish, but with her, I actually liked the class and went into Spanish 4.” – Ariana Jackson, grade 11
“I believe more people should take jewelry with Ms. Loy because it is a very fun class and you can make a bunch of your own jewelry so you don’t have to buy it with your own money. I also believe this is a cool class to take because you can learn a lot of skills that you couldn’t learn in any other art class. I also enjoy the class because of the teacher. She has taught all of my art classes and I think she is really good at what she does.” – Emery Ramsey, grade 11
“I took 3D design with Duke and I had a lot of fun. We did several projects and had plenty of time to do well on them. Duke is a fun teacher who is engaging and will help if you ask. We spent a lot of time with pottery and made several kinds of pots. We also learned a lot about the history of some of the things we were doing and looked at several different cultures. Overall, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot in this class.” – Lana Straw, grade 11
“[Digital Media A with Mr. Laurie] was very fun for me because I got to explore a medium I had never done before. Mr Laurie is also an awesome teacher and makes sure he helps you in any way you need.” – Nathan DiDonato, grade 11
“Why I would recommend [Business Economics] is because, in my opinion, it’s the most important class you can take at Rocky. Usually other classes seem meaningless in the ‘real world,’ but Business Economics teaches you how to create a business, how to act in a business, how to make money in the business ‘world,’ and other things regarding any job you could have.” – Sofia Sonnier, grade 11
“The class I’m recommending is FRCC Intro Into Programming.
If you have ever thought about going into programming, this is the class to join. First of all, Mr. Mazzia is an amazing teacher; he will help you as much as you need without making you feel unwanted. Next, this class works using real world applications while you’re learning your first ever programming language–simple things like building a calculator or making a cash register system. And it even gives college credit.” – Jordan Lucero, grade 11
