Rocky values art and Lobo artists. The campus has tons of art work in the hallways, in rooms, and all around the building. Each piece has a story. These are a few highlights.
This mural was painted especially for the wrestling room in 2009 by Becca and Chuck Black. It’s obviously intended to encourage and hype up the wrestlers.
These pieces of art can be found right by the main entrance of the school. They are created by art students and changed throughout the year. These particular pieces were done by 9-12 grade art students.
You can find this piece in the hallway going by the locker rooms towards the Aux Gym. It was designed by Mr. Dukart and painted by Tom Balchak, former Rocky teacher.
Each trash can around the school is painted in its own unique way by the National Art Honor Society (NAHS). This is a project that they used to do every year. The goal was to paint every trash can in the school, but when Mr. Dukart passed NAHS to Mrs. Loy they stopped doing the trash cans and started the legacy project.
This second piece of the Legacy project was completed during the 23-24 school year by NAHS and can be found right outside of the art rooms.
This mural of wolves overlooks the Rocks. It was painted by Rebecca Pittman in 1995.
There are several pieces in Maroon Bells that are part of the mural contest created by Mr. Klebes.
“It’s intended to get some images and the hallways a little bit more inspirational and inclusive, to a degree. It’s not really a contest. There’s a group of us that come up with the theme for the year and then kids who are interested in doing a piece, they can submit some of their past artwork to show they have the ability to do it. Then they can submit what they are thinking as far as what they would do to represent the theme. So, last year the deal was immigration. Students just submitted ‘here’s what I would do with it, this is what I’m thinking’ and then they submitted their price. Then we chose a student to execute that vision. We’ve had people who do paint, some people have done digital art. I like having different styles, I just think it’s more appealing. So, I just like the fact that people have chosen to do different styles.”
Two pictures of the art for this project are below. There are so many others! Look around as you travel the hallways and see what other art you can find. Each one has a unique story and a unique artist who has made Rocky a more beautiful place to be.
