On September 29, the Rocky football team played their homecoming game against Fort Collins High School. With a large number of students in attendance, it was easy to see that Rocky was working hard to beat Fort Collins’ on and off the field. This effort helped make the game and homecoming as a whole a more memorable experience.
The Rocky student section makes a considerable effort to show the football team their support through chants and cheers led by the Rocky Cheer team. On Friday’s homecoming game, chants from Collins and Rocky were a competition of who could be the loudest and most enthusiastic, Rocky’s cheer team worked hard against Fort Collins’ team to corral more students in the cheers.
“I liked the cheers because it was fun to do them outside of the assemblies, and it was fun to do the party cheer against Collins, which we definitely did better,” Rocky sophomore Kat Colson said.
When Collins failed to match Rocky’s energy, the students saw it as a victory. With all the cheering and desire for a win off-field, the students at French Field gave cheers such as the “Party Chant” their all. This push to come out on top made sitting in the stands exciting for every Rocky student in attendance.
Student rivalry could also be seen on the field. Collins and Rocky’s players put in their best effort to make it to their end of the field as students in the bleachers cheered them on. Both sides maintained good sportsmanship by taking a knee when players were hurt, whilst still preserving a sense of friendly competition. Players celebrated when they made a touchdown or gained a few yards, and when Rocky ended the night with a win, Rocky’s players and coaches celebrated the victory against Fossil.
With a new win under Rocky’s belt, homecoming week ended on a high note and students and players alike got to take pride in their win against Fort Collins.
“Winning the game against Collins was the highlight of the evening. My favorite parts of the game were the band and cheer routine at halftime,” Rocky sophomore Willow Daylin said.
Homecoming is a school event that brings out the competitive side of Rocky students, cheers and scoring at the homecoming game and the effort to build excitement beforehand showed just how much energy and pride Rocky students have. Competition can make many things much more exciting, and after winning such a big game in the year, Rocky students were given a memorable end to the week and a memory of this year at Rocky Mountain High School.
