One of Rocky’s most notable features is its school spirit. Assemblies and spirit weeks demonstrate how much fun it is to show pride in your school through themes and events. School spirit is one of the best ways to excite incoming Freshmen, give the entire student body common interests, and create a school where everything feels more personal.
Time in middle school is very brief–three years is hardly enough time for someone to become involved in a school identity when it won’t be long before they’re already moving on. Rocky and its students show incoming freshmen right off the bat just how much they enjoy showing school pride.
When you learn the cheers and see how enthusiastic higher grades get competing with each other, it doesn’t take long before many kids also want to be included in that atmosphere. Rocky’s school spirit shows every freshman the differences between high school and middle school.
Middle schools may have assemblies and spirit weeks but Rocky has often planned events for the students rather than to convey specific information. It’s a way to make school more involved for everyone, even the people who don’t take an interest in any clubs or sports. It’s important for a school to be more than just learning, and high school is often a memorable experience for most people, so creating a community that students are excited to be in makes Rocky special.
Rocky’s school spirit shows how the community at Rocky is very different but also connected in many ways. Spirit weeks give various themes that people interpret in their own ways and build up excitement for the important events following them. Decking yourself out in tacky tourist wear or sports jerseys shows everyone that participation is encouraged and is also a way to give every student common interests. Sporting Rocky shirts at the Homecoming games and assemblies reflects the pride that so many have in being part of this school’s community.
StuCo is the backbone of assemblies and themes that pop up in the school during the year. Anticipation for many events increases when you walk into a school that never stops reminding you that something is coming. Whether it is posters, balloons, or window paint, Rocky sneaks school spirit into every hallway from the beginning of school with Rocky’s colors to Halloween and spirit weeks with themes and decor.
School can be a concentration of stress and fatigue, but many things about Rocky’s atmosphere battle these components. And getting involved in school spirit is one of the biggest ways. When people come to Rocky they learn just how important school spirit can be. If you want to show your school spirit, homecoming is coming on September 30th and is a great way to show your school pride!
