On August 25th, 2023, the Rocky Mountain High School student body gathered on the bleachers of the gym for the Back to School assembly. Put on by the student council, the assembly wrapped up the first full week of school and kicked off the beginning of Rocky’s 51st year.
The assembly started at 10:30 a.m. and began with a performance from the spirit band and the national anthem sung by the Prima Choir. The new staff was introduced and the festivities began.
“Having the chance to play for the assembly in the band was so much fun. I look forward to assemblies all the time,” sophomore Ava Giovando said.
The first $5 Friday was won by senior Mary Bringhurst, who received $50 from the spirit leaders in honor of the school’s first assembly of the year.
Spirit leaders then got the cheers going, leading Rocky students in the “Where my Lobos At?” cheer and the Roller Coaster, shutting off the lights and lighting up the gym with the flashlights from everyone’s phones. Senior emcees led the party cheer between the upperclassmen and underclassmen.
“The cheers are a great way to feel the spirit of Rocky–my favorite is probably the rollercoaster,” sophomore Eleanor Fields remarked.
Dr. Woodall, Rocky’s principal, gave his first speech of the year. He highlighted the importance of gratitude in the coming year and discussed the Lobo Way, remarking that “the Lobo way is the mindset that we all realize we are part of something bigger.”
Freshmen emcees gave information on Lobo Night, happening August 31st starting at 4:30 in front of French Field. Sophomore emcees introduced the Peer representatives who gave a quick explanation of the role of the peer group at Rocky and then carried on their tradition of dancing at the assembly–this year decked out in gold outfits.
Junior and senior emcees led the teacher and student games. Teachers played three rounds of “What’s in the Box,” with Mr. Vigil winning round one with bead necklaces, Mr. Anderson winning round two with rubber ducks, and Dr. Fuentes-Tauber winning round three with jello. The upperclassmen and underclassmen competed in a relay race, wearing drunk goggles as they dribbled across the gym floor and rode a scooter back to their team. The upperclassmen took the win.
“I was excited to play a mystery box game, being the science teacher that I am, though I have to say when I first saw the box I was worried my arms weren’t going to reach through it,” Dr. Yajaira Fuentes-Tauber said.
Student council carried banners across the gym with the Stuco Instagram handle, @rockystuco, and gave $5 gift cards to three winners who followed Rocky on Instagram.
Closing out the assembly, a round of applause was given to the Rocky staff to thank them for their hard work, and the students were dismissed. They flooded the gym floor and gradually made their way back to class, ready for the new school year!
“It was really nice to hear students clapping for teachers and staff. I love teaching and it’s nice to be appreciated,” Mrs. Amy White said.
