Powder Puffs

The “Powderpuff” game is an all-girls football tradition that students around the country have been playing for fun and novelty for years.

The game pits the senior and junior girls against each other in a friendly touch football game coached by boys from their respective grades. This year’s Rocky Powderpuff event, coordinated by senior Bailyn Furrow, is taking a charitable focus aimed at raising money for Respite Care, a local organization that provides care for disabled children.

“It’s a cause I was passionate about helping,” Furrow said. “I figured the student body would enjoy supporting the organization as well. I let the idea take off and it’s off to a great start this year.”

Furrow is taking this operation on for her peer project, a philanthropic assignment given to first year peer counselors to make a charitable difference in their community. Adopt-a-family started as one of these projects.

“I got the idea to do this for my Peer project because last year I had the opportunity to organize the junior team,” Furrow said. “This year I decided I not only wanted to organize it but make it more impactful for the student body.”

The game will feature teams of girls from the junior and senior classes as well as male coaches leading the girls from their grade. The junior coaches will be Teagan Liufau, Seren Hughes-Ford, Matteo Vattano, Aaron Lambert, Clayton Baca, and Max Poduska. Coaches from the senior class will be Brady Morris, Tyler Hyland, Jordan Williams, Austin Maciel, Jeff Ellis, and Ryan Hutcheson. Referees will be Trey Wagner, Spencer Gendreau, and Adrian Klein.

“I’m really hoping to see the juniors and seniors battle it out for a good cause,” Ellis said. “I wish the juniors luck because they are going to need it.”

The game is an opportunity for girls and boys from the junior and senior classes to exercise their competitive and charitable spirit in a way that benefits the community.

“The most exciting part to me is actually getting to play a sport girls don’t usually get to,” junior player Kelsey Achziger said.

The teams will be practicing on Sundays for the rest of the month and the game will be held on October 8th at 4:00p, at a to be announced location.
