Watch Serenity
Most of you have probably not seen or even heard of the movie “Serenity” starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. This was the same boat I was in when I walked into the movies Sunday night. My friends and I went to the theater planning to see a movie that wasn’t even there (thanks to my bad researching on which theater to go to), but because of that mistake, the universe kindly handed us a suspenseful thriller that blew our minds.
We decided to buy tickets to this movie because the timing worked out well and, to make it more exciting, we didn’t read about the movie, so none of us knew what to expect from it. The confusion we experienced for the first half of the movie was hard to deal with, but the shock we felt when the entire story came together was unreal.
Now I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but if you are a fan of the movie “The Truman Show,” this movie might just blow your mind again. Along with the crazy twist in the story, the cinematography was captivating and the actors played their roles exquisitely. For me, it’s easy to say, the movie was an exhilarating experience.
The craziest part of it all though, might just be the resoundingly bad critiques this movie received. After the movie, I was surprised that none of us had heard about it because it was released in October. I felt like that should have been enough time for a movie like this to gain some attention. And then I read the reviews.
As Peter Travers, a critic for the Rolling Stones wrote, “And yet the batsh*t bonkers ‘Serenity’ fails on every level, first as entertainment and then as a new-agey thumbsucker about a magical, mystical tour through the subconscious. ‘Serenity’ finds new definitions of bad that almost make the damn thing worth watching for its magnificent flameout.” Or as Wesley Morris wrote for The New York Times, “In ‘Serenity,’ Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway portray exes who team up to do something bad. It turns out to be this movie.”
Whether the movie is indeed the thrilling masterpiece I believe it was (despite a few scenes), or the epic fail the general population believes it was, it may need to be the next movie you watch so you can figure it out for yourself.
For the time being ‘Serenity’ is playing at AMC CLASSIC Worthington 6 , where tickets are $1.99.
