Black Panther Movie Review

The newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent its first week in theatres breaking box office records and grossing $218 million during its opening weekend. “Black Panther” has become the top-grossing film with a black director and a mainly black cast. Taking the place of the movie that previously held the record, “Straight Outta Compton.”

The movie was met with positive reviews, even receiving a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Chadwick Boseman reprised his role as T’Challa and gave a brilliant performance alongside co-stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira. Jordan’s role as Erik Killmonger, the film’s main antagonist, was arguably one of the best in the MCU. His character allowed the viewer to empathize as well as want him to be taken down, which is rare for movie villains.

The movie turns away from the constant humor style as in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Thor: Ragnarok.” There are still funny aspects of the movie but overall it is less overdone than in previous movies. The film explores the more serious topic of a nation’s responsibility to the rest of the world. The fictional city of Wakanda is far more technically advanced than the rest of Africa and beyond. However, they keep their knowledge to themselves in order to keep their tribe safe. When the movie’s main villain decides they are obligated to share their abilities with the rest of the world it causes a moral turmoil for the rest of the characters.

The real-world problems faced in the movie give the viewer something to think about after watching. In this way, it strays from its predecessors. Overall, the movie is a great addition to the Marvel Universe. You can look forward to seeing “Black Panther” in theaters again, as he will have a role in “Avengers: Infinity War” coming out May 4th.

It is showing in theaters everywhere, with a run time of just over two hours and is rated PG-13.
