Winter Sports
As winter sports get started, the girls basketball team is looking for redemption after losing in their second playoff game last season against Castle View. This year they hope to pass the second round of the playoffs and win the whole thing.
Senior Maddy Bennett, also known as “Buckets,” mentioned how they’re looking to improve on the struggles they dealt with last season, including “free throws, especially in close games…and not finishing the games as strong as we started.”
Bennett explained how she and her teammates have become super close throughout the years. She can’t wait to start off the season with them and come out with some wins, including the city championship.
As the girls basketball team is looking to win a city championship, the wrestling team is looking for a winning season as well. In addition, they hope to grow not only as wrestlers, but as people too. “We push each other, but genuinely care about each other as well,” said junior Coleton Riggs.
Confidence is a key aspect in life and Riggs mentioned how looking back to freshman year he struggled with confidence the most. “Walking in there and seeing all the seniors intimidated me;I was afraid of not being good enough.”
Riggs stated how disrespect is not dealt with “lightly,” and explained how there is a lot of respect gained while wrestling and that it can benefit their growth and their lives. Riggs said that having a “general respect for each other…and treating each other as family” is an improvement he’s noticed from the team so far.
As the Lobos go into the swimming season, senior Sarah Neff said she really wants to see her team grow this coming season and focus on a good attitude throughout the season.
For Neff, having to wake up for morning practices is always tough. She stated races are challenging because improvement in swimming takes a long time and a lot of work. There’s a lot of leadership on the team and so many incredible swimmers who will continue to motivate her throughout the season.
Neff went on to discuss how the relationships that she has created aren’t like any other team she’s been a part of. “We all understand each other and bond over several different things,” she said. She also explained how “secret sister” is a big reason that the team has become so close. “Bonding events, such as secret sister, allows the team to get to know each other better.”
