Rocky’s esports club started up again, and with that, comes a new season. The preseason for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate started on September 17, 2025, and during that week, Coach Mazzia decided the teams for the season.

How the teams are decided is crucial to success in the season, and more importantly, during the playoffs. Each team has three players, and the stronger the teams are, the higher the success rate the school has at winning the championship. Each school can have two teams make it to the playoffs and the teams that make it need to be strong enough to stay in the playoffs– as one loss disqualifies the team.

With those stakes on line, Coach Mazzia created a tournament for all of Rocky’s competitors to find the strongest players for its leading teams. Varsity is the most important team with the strongest players. Last year, the strongest Rocky player graduated, and another member of Varsity quit, leaving the team needing two new strong players willing to take the challenge.

This year, the team is led by returning player Henry Mogonye, with Elliot Fitz and Lance Hulsing completing the team.

Elliot is hopeful for the coming season, as he says, “I think our chances are pretty solid because we have Henry.”

Henry is the strongest member of the team and the captain, and he leads a very promising season providing leadership to the other team members.
Varsity is hopeful for the season and is off to a good start. On Wednesday, they fought against Lakewood High School’s varsity team and won after a loss last year.
Only time will tell how the season fares and its success hinges on the members’ drive to improve and their commitment to practice.
