What on earth is a Kolache? I just recently found out! Pronounced “Ko-Lah-Chee,” this delectable doughy food can pass as a quick sweet snack or even a tasty savory meal.
Whether you are in the mood for a dessert treat or maybe craving something more filling and savory, the Colorado Kolache Company is the place to go. The company was opened in January of 2022 by Nancy Agnew and her family. Their Kolaches range from breakfasts to lunches to sweets and are made fresh daily. Breakfast and lunch Kolaches are sealed spheres or ovals of dough filled with meat, eggs, veggies, and many other things. Their sweet ones look more like danishes or pastries and are topped with fruit jams and fillings, such as peach, blueberry, and strawberry and they include cheesecake options. Where danishes are light and fluffy, Kolaches dough is more dense and sweet–like a brioche.
Not only are these pastries mouthwatering, but they are also extremely affordable. Breakfast and lunch Kolaches are $4.60 each, while the sweets are $2.50 a piece. Mondays and Tuesdays are a lunch special and you can get a sweet and savory Kolache, with a free canned soda of your choice for under $8.
I stumbled upon the Colorado Kolache Company with my friend. Her dad had mentioned how he thought they were so delicious, and how he and his co-workers love to go and get some during their lunch break, so we did the same.
Originally from the Czech Republic, this food migrated its way to Texas and is now a delicacy to the state. Sweet Kolaches are the more traditional option, with savory ones being more of a newer thing. More information can be found on NPR.
But don’t wait! They stop baking at noon, so get there while supplies last! The Colorado Kolache Company is located at 1717 S College Avenue, across the street from Dave’s Hot Chicken. They are open every day of the week from 7:00 am-2:00 pm, or until they run out of Kolaches.
