If you’ve been at Rocky for long enough, you’ve probably heard of the family and consumer science classes. But have you ever heard about one of the fantastic teachers who teaches these classes, Mrs. Lawrence?
Mrs. Lawrence is a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at RMHS. She teaches a variety of classes, from teen choices to Interior design, alongside the other people in the department: Mrs. Linstedt, Mrs. Blaho, Mrs. McCarthy who is on leave for her new child, and in her place is Mr. Vigil.
“Family and consumer sciences essentially have different tracks for career exploration like culinary and interior design. Some students use the department as a fun elective or as a stepping stone in a career path that they’re interested in or passionate about. You can learn things other schools don’t offer, like parenting classes and interior design. What I like about this department is the fact that it can be accessible and interesting for anyone– no matter their academic interest or level. I like to say the motto for us is #RealSkillsForRealLife. Because the skills you might learn in Mrs. McCarthy’s Child Development will help you later down the road if you become a parent,” Mrs. Lawrence explained.
Outside of school, Mrs. Lawrence has one son. He is a Rocky grad who is now a freshman at Colorado Mesa University. She loved having him at Rocky because she knew he’d be well taken care of by the amazing staff and students at the school, and she was sad to see him go.
She enjoys being outside, going on walks, hiking, and shopping at places like flea markets and yard sales.
“It has to be a bargain!” she said. Her best find was a set of stacking multicolored Ethan Allen ottomans from 1974.
She also loves to read fictional and non-fiction books, especially titles about WW2. “I don’t really know why I’m so fascinated with it. It’s pretty morbid.”
She loves working at Rocky and is passionate about the work she does, and it’s obvious she cares for her students. “I really enjoy the students, obviously. But I also really love my team, they’re like a family to me!”
Mrs. Lawrence teaches Teen Choices and the visual arts classes: Fashion Design 1, Fashion Design 2, Interior Design 1, and Interior Design 2.
When you’re choosing classes, consider a Family and Consumer Sciences class and get to know Mrs. Lawrence better.
