Police Brutality is Not New.

Police brutality is the excessive and unwarranted use of force by law enforcement.

Police brutality is the excessive and unwarranted use of force by law enforcement.

Law enforcement has always been a way to keep our society in control. However, as of recently, police corruption seems to be spiraling. Police brutality has become a big problem in the last 10 years resulting in many injuries to innocents and occasionally death. So many cases of police brutality have a code over the last few years that people are beginning to distrust the idea of cops at all.

The BLM movement is one of the biggest parts of life right now and many young people will remember it starting with the death of George Floyd one year ago, but it has been around for longer than most people know. The names we say are new murders. Law enforcement has been abusing its power for too long. We should have dealt with this problem. Americans are meant to be equal.

A well-known event where police brutality echoed happened in New Orleans when Robert Davis a school teacher in the area, was arrested and beaten for suspected intoxication. Of course, Davis was not intoxicated. A month later Davis was attacked by four police officers when going to buy a cigarette. It is assumed that they did this because of the prior event.

An associate from a law office caught the entire thing on tape. Unfortunately, the associate was also brutally beaten and though he did turn in his evidence, it did not work in drawing a suspension or expulsion from the police force. All charges were cleared and the officers got away without any punishment.

Abner Louima was the victim of a different kind of brutality. August 9, 1997, Louima was sexually assaulted with a broom by officer Justin Volpe. He was then beaten and tortured with that broom in the bathroom of a bar. The officer was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the assault.

The instance was one of the more known occurrences of police brutality. However, the idea that Lauima was blamed for it even though his attacker was put in prison and got to a lot of people. It is believed to be one of the situations that sparked the movement against police brutality.

Police brutality has always had something to do with race. A disproportionate number of police brutality victims are minorities. There have been cases all over the world where white cops have assaulted those of another race and the problem is growing. Recently, there has been a new movement involving black lives and blue lives.

Black Lives Matter is supported by those who believe that police brutality has to stop, especially when involving African American lives. Blue Lives Matter is supported by those who believe the police are completely innocent of the crimes and are being treated unfairly. There is also the All Lives Matter movement which is supported by those who think that nothing should change.

In my personal opinion, Blue Lives Matter is terrible. As much as I respect police officers, the assumption that they are being treated unfairly while their own officers are killing people and beating them is absolutely ridiculous. All Lives Matter, though it does seem like an ideal sentiment, is not what it seems to be. Those who back the idea are assuming that nothing needs to be done, but there is so much we need to do–especially when involving brutal beatings by police officers.

Though I do completely support the black lives matter movement occasionally people tend to get it out of hand with their accusations. Not all cops are corrupt. That is what I have seen people go wrong. Assuming that our law enforcement is completely immoral will get us nothing but trouble. A majority of police officers in our world have done nothing but help us and sacrifice their lives and time to make sure that we’re safe.

Learning that every single one of these people who have sacrificed everything for us is a corrupt and moral human being is just as disgusting as assuming that they are being treated unfairly and not abusing people. It was definitely a problem in our police system because of the things that have been happening. It needs to change, but for us to do that we all need to work together.
