February 27th marked the first day of official practices for eight Rocky spring sports.
Baseball, girls soccer, and girls track and field return from seasons that resulted in top eight state finishes, while boys swimming, boys track, and girls tennis look to improve on their own respective placings. Rocky has also expanded the athletic department, adding boys and girls lacrosse and girls golf for the 2017 spring season, all looking to turn heads in their inaugural seasons.
Baseball
Rocky is historically dominant in baseball and last year was no exception. The team finished the season as state runner-up, losing four to nine in the championship game against Cherokee Trail. “I was really proud of where we finished up last year,” said head coach Scott Bullock. “Our coaches and players did a really good job of just hanging in there and fighting the good fight. We’v...
Girls Golf
Last year, the girls golf team played under the Poudre banner; this year they have a new home at Rocky. The combined Poudre-Rocky girls golf team is hoping to make an impact in their first year as Lobos. “It’s exciting to have a bit of a fresh start,” said new head coach Chris Nickel. “I think there’s a lot of good positive energy around the team this year.” Seniors Payton Fischer an...
Boys Lacrosse
A sport new to the Lobos is the boys lacrosse team. It replaces Fort Collins Unified as the CHSAA lacrosse team for city schools, a program that has been around since the 1990s. “I’m generally very excited to get going,” said head coach Alex Smith. “We have a great squad of players from all four high schools, and we are going to be very competitive.” Although the team is made up of pl...
Boys Swimming
Looking to improve upon last year’s results, the boys swimming team has been working hard in the weight room and in the pool. Although they qualified some swimmers for state, Rocky finished the championship meet with no team points. This year, the goal is to qualify more swimmers with chances to score there and to record a top five finish (up one from last year) at the conference meet. Key...
Track and Field
Starting on March 11, the track teams will start competing in hopes to better last year’s results and create a name for the program. The Lobos return a solid core of girls from last year’s fourth-place state team, while the boys look to send a new group to the championship meet. “I feel like we had a very successful season last year,” said head coach Jamie Mackenzie. “We were very youn...
