CJ states, “My piece is titled ‘Testosterone’ because I am a transgender man and I underwent hormone replacement therapy where I inject testosterone every two weeks. It being in the flowers signifies to me that it’s this beautiful thing and source of growth for me, it’s a very positive image where as the connotative piece of it is you assume it would be heroin and people sometimes think that I’m just destroying my body by taking testosterone when in reality it’s like the thing that saved me. So it’s kind of that play on juxtaposition.”
