Playoffs! Every team in the state strives to be a part of playoff. They are a huge tournament in which 32 of the top teams in the state compete to see who is the best. The formula is decided by a team’s winning percentage.

Rocky Mountain High School’s mens’ soccer team (#23 in the state) has the opportunity to compete in playoffs this year. Last Thursday the Lobos took on Rampart (#10 in the state) in a head to head battle to see who got to move on to the next round. The team’s mood going in seemed to be pretty calm, but nerves were still high amongst the players, as might be expected.

The Lobos have a record of 6 wins 8 losses and 1 tie this season. Having the second hardest schedule in the state, the team played 8 out of the 10 teams ranked at the top and because of that it was able to keep the boys in playoffs, giving them the #23 spot. Rampart, having 12 wins 2 losses with 1 tie and having the 37th hardest schedule in the state, were able to secure the #10 spot.

Timmy Thompson a freshman on the Rocky team said before the game, “I believe this team can definitely go far in playoffs, it just depends on how hard we are willing to work.”

Although the team didn’t reach its full potential and played at a low level the first half, going to half time 1-0, Rampart, the Lobos changed up the roster and reevaluated their mindset and came through and equalized the score bringing it to 2-2, sending the teams into golden goal.

Center Defensive Mid Harry Yoxall tried to raise spirits during the second half and told the team, “If we can sit through 90-minutes of a class we hate, we can do something we love for 40.”

In sudden death the Lobos played for ten minutes when Aaron Biggerstaff picked up the balloon at the 35-yard line, had a lucky touch past the defensive mid, and rifled the shot under the keeper’s hands, winning the game. The entire team completely engulfed Biggerstaff in a celebratory dogpile.

Rocky goes up against Collins this Wednesday, October 31, on French for round of 16. It’s
