Insatiable Review

The series “Insatiable” came out on Netflix back in August of 2018. The new series stars Debby Ryan and other known actors like Dallas Roberts. The series continues to receive criticism over some of its depictions of eating disorders and bullying.

The new drama series is about a bullied, overweight high school student named Patty who becomes thin after she gets punched in the jaw and has to go on an all liquid diet. As I

continued into the series, I saw how she wants to prove everyone wrong by becoming popular and winning beauty pageants with the help of a man named Bob Armstrong. Bob is struggling with his own issues of family life and a personal crisis. s you continue to learn about the different characters in the show you learn about Patty’s true intentions and how she wants to get back at the people who fat shamed her.

As the show continues into its complicated timeline, I noticed trends glorifying binge eating and the message that skinny equals strong. The show also continued to try to normalize the dangerous behaviors of binge eating and abusing laxatives and sends a harmful message to people who are struggling with an an eating disorder–that in order to feel good about yourself, you need to be skinny. The message should be that in order to feel good about yourself you need to have self love.

Though this series has some funny content, it is just full of offensive jokes and has harmful messages and scenes that some viewers could find triggering. All together, I don’t think that the show has any sort of positive message for teens and people struggling with an eating disorder and should have not been renewed for a new season.
