Former Key Club President Olivia Becker celebrates the opening of Putnam Elementary School’s new reading room.

Key Club is in 38 different countries, including the United States, where there are about 270,000 clubs. Here at Rocky Mountain High, we are lucky to have Key Club as a part of our community. Key Club is about building leadership skills and helping people around the world.

In 2016, Key Club partnered with the Thirst Project to build wells in Swaziland, Africa, so the people there can have access to clean water. In addition, Key Club raised money to give books, furniture, and shelves to create a reading room for Putnam Elementary School. The room opened at the beginning of this school year.

Key Club members sell chocolates every year for $1 each and the money is split to go to projects in progress and the club itself. Also, Key Club makes fleece blankets every year for the families that are a part of Adopt a Family so that they experience a warm hello from Rocky!

Though Key Club is only a high school club, the fun doesn’t stop there. Circle K is an international, premier collegiate and university community service, leadership development, and friendship organization. Kiwanis International is an international service club that offers anyone over the age of 18 the opportunity to help people and countries around the world.

Kiwanis was founded in 1915 and 10 years later Key Club was founded to offer younger people the opportunity to help make a difference around the world. Kiwanis has over 600,000 volunteers spread over 80 countries.

Through The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 34,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. Kiwanis also does small community projects that range from educational lessons to free haircuts. You may see them around town at various events, like Taste of Fort Collins and New West Fest.

Key Club is constantly looking for new members and volunteers. If you are interested in being a part of service opportunities, they meet on Mondays in room 307.
