Though school is often the last thing on a high schooler’s mind in summer, Rocky’s forensics team continued to represent the school well at the National Competition in Birmingham, Alabama. Numerous participants placed at the event, some highly.

Ailish Beveridge, a current Rocky senior, went all the way to the semifinals in extemporaneous debate. When asked about the competition as a whole, she said, “It allowed all of us to compete on a level with people who were phenomenally good.”

Another competitor, senior Ben Lacey, mirrored that thought. He said his biggest takeaway was, “Proving that [Rocky] can be competitive.” He said that to place in the top 32 when faced with competition from programs with much more experience and funding was a really proud moment for himself and for the program.

Over 1,162 schools and 4,000 students competed at the national level. Ranking was an incredible accomplishment, achieved by nine Rocky students.

To help these Rocky students return to nationals this year, the Rocky community can donate and attend the “Nationals Fundraiser” that the team hosts each spring. It’s the perfect chance to see some top level performances and support Rocky’s own. For those who want to get involved in speaking and debate, the team meets weekly for practices and anyone can join.
