Houston We Have a Problem

Indeed they do. The fourth-largest city in the US has been hit with over 50 inches of rain in the last four days. The 2.3 million Houstonians affected by Hurricane Harvey are suffering from all sides right now, and it’s up to the generous citizens of the world who are willing to donate to help our fellow Americans.

Thinking of aid and relief, the Red Cross comes to mind, but due to the mishandling of the Haitian earthquake back in 2010, the recent call for donations has supported grassroots organizations such as the Houston Food Bank or the Houston Humane Society.

After choosing an organization, the next step is to choose what to donate. Cash donations are the most useful because not all facilities can use food and water donations, whereas cash is always wanted. After the fact, old clothes or household items can make a huge difference to a family that lost everything, but during the crisis, stick to the basics.

The final piece in donating to victims of Hurricane Harvey is picking the moment. Donations to the victims in the time of need are always welcomed, but the case can be made that donations after the fact, to help rebuild infrastructure, can be just as useful.

Regardless of when, what, or how donations are made, anything given to those in need is beneficial towards helping Houstonians get back on their feet.
